The Visual Arts faculty encourages students to think analytically and critically about all forms of visual communication.
Our students enjoy the experience of making art, while experimenting, taking risks and pushing boundaries. Drawing is a fundamental component of the art-making experience at Mosman and our students learn to link narratives into their practice in order to build concepts and to develop their higher order thinking.
Smartboards and a computer pod support contemporary learning practises throughout all stages with students also using their laptops for individual and collaborative tasks.
The heritage listed Visual Arts building is dedicated to creative activity by providing specialist classrooms, studio facilities as well as exhibition space. Mosman is one of the few schools that still has an operational wet dark room that is WHS safe, a printing press, plus a well equipped ceramics room.
Mosman High provides an integrated Special Program for talented visual arts students in years seven and eight. An extension class for smaller groups of stage 5 students is offered outside school hours.
Challenging courses in Ceramics and Visual Design are options for both senior and junior students while Photography is offered as a one-unit course for seniors.
The Visual Design course focuses on real world design problems to produce outcomes that are functional and innovative. There is a strong emphasis on sustainability and the impact that good design can have on our environment.
The Visual Arts Department benefits from a strong relationship with our local regional gallery while also employing the proximity of the Art Gallery of NSW, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the White Rabbit Gallery. Students are encouraged to exhibit in local, state and national exhibitions where they consistently achieve success.
HSC results in Visual Arts at Mosman High are outstanding and we have a well-deserved reputation for developing our students’ creativity.
Mosman’s team of very experienced visual arts teachers are all practising artists who are committed to realising the potential of every student.
