Human society and its environment

The faculty of Humans, Society in Environments (HSIE) introduce students to a range of subjects in Stages 4, 5 and 6.

Geography, History, and Commerce are offered in Stage 4 and 5. Ancient History, Business Studies, Economics, Legal Studies, Modern History, and Society and Culture are offered in Stage 6.

These Courses offered by HSIE have wide applications throughout life. Students gain knowledge, skills and strategies through the use of technologies and collaborative learning that caters for individual differences. This is designed to equip our students as active citizens within a rapidly changing, globalised society.

Academic rigour is a feature of HSIE. Geography is a compulsory component in Year 7 and 9 and the students focus on the interconnectedness of local, national and global issues. By gathering, interpreting and synthesising geographical data, both within and outside the classroom, students can gain a ‘hands-on’ approach to their learning.

History is compulsory in Year 8 and 10 and students examine both the Ancient and Modern world from Africa to the Holocaust. Source analysis and examining primary and secondary sources for a variety of perspectives are fundamental to the study of History.

Stage 6 (Year 11 and 12)

Subjects cover a wide range of content such as Business Management, Finance, International and Environmental Law, Change and Continuity and allow further examination of issues, concepts and knowledge. Students are challenged with a diversity of views and are required to undertake thorough individual research, construct reports, and present their conclusions to a variety of audiences.

A key objective is life-long learning within these subjects so that students continue to appraise their own and society’s changing values and beliefs.
