Mathematics

The Mathematics Faculty at Mosman High School is a modern, dynamic and progressive faculty that prides itself on its academic successes. The faculty embraces new technologies and ideas and takes a holistic approach to teaching and learning while catering to individual strengths and interests. Classrooms are safe and supportive environments where students are encouraged to take risks with their learning and grow as mathematicians.

We aim to nurture an appreciation for mathematics within our students. We believe the study of mathematics provides a precise means of communication and is a powerful tool for solving problems both within and beyond our subject area.

Mathematics at Mosman High School provides opportunities for originality, challenge and leisure.

Stages 4 and 5 (Years 7-10)

Mathematics in Years 7-10 focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, communication, logical reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving skills. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems relevant to their further education and everyday lives.

Students study Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Within these strands they will cover a range of topic areas including: financial mathematics, algebraic techniques, equations, linear and non-linear relationships, surface area and volume, properties of geometrical figures, trigonometry, data collection and representation, data analysis, and probability.

Stage 6 (Years 11-12)

The Mathematics Stage 6 syllabuses are designed to offer opportunities for students to think mathematically through questioning, communicating, reasoning and reflecting. They promote development of 21st-century knowledge, skills, understanding, values and attitudes and provide challenge. Students generalise, find connections, think critically and creatively, using appropriate technology to support mathematical activity.

In Year 11 we offer the following mathematics courses at Mosman High School:

  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard

In Year 12 we offer the following mathematics courses at Mosman High School:

  • Mathematics Extension 2
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard 2

Acceleration and enrichment

The Mathematics Faculty at Mosman High School has introduced an accelerated mathematics class starting with Year 7 2022. In Year 7, this accelerated class is fast tracked through the Year 7 and Year 8 mathematics curriculum allowing them to study Year 9 mathematics in Year 8, Year 10 mathematics in Year 9, and so on. We are very excited about this initiative which serves to both enrich our students as well as allow them to complete 2 units of their HSC by completing the Mathematics Advanced HSC course in Year 11.

We also offer individualised acceleration pathways to meet the specific needs of our students. This is complemented by the enrichment provided in each classroom on a lesson to lesson basis.

Throughout the year, Mosman High School students are offered opportunities to participate in a variety of mathematics competitions.

  • The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) is an engaging 30-problem competition that demonstrates the importance and relevance of mathematics in students' everyday lives.
  • The Maths Challenge, usually conducted over a maximum of 4 consecutive weeks, involves students attempting six problems individually or in pairs. Each problem has several parts and may take some time to solve.
  • The Maths Enrichment module which is designed for expert mathematicians and involves twelve problems solved over 16 weeks.
